Tony Wilson, hailed as “unquestionably one of the most original guitar stylists on the Canadian scene”, presents music inspired by the plight and lives of the homeless and drug addiction in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. His novella, A Day’s Life, is a fictional account of a day in the life of a crack-addicted musician who lives and busks on the streets of the DTES. A limited number of advanced copies will be released at the concert. The evening will feature Wilson’s music performed by A Day’s Life Band consisting of some of the finest musicians and improvisers in Canada – JP Carter on trumpet, Jesse Zubot on violin, Peggy Lee on cello, Russell Sholberg on bass and Skye Brooks on drums. Wilson has toured across Canada and internationally with his own groups as well with other renowned artists such as cellist Lee, clarinetist François Houle and singer Elizabeth Fischer. He studied with many acclaimed jazz musicians including Oliver Gannon, Dave Holland, John Abercrombie, Kevin Eubanks and Steve Coleman. He won a West Coast Music Award with his band Video Barbeque and released the critically acclaimed ‘Lowest Note’ in 2001, which went on to become a pick of the year in the Globe and Mail. Wilson’s compositions have been played by artists as diverse as the NOW Orchestra, the Hard Rubber Orchestra, Myra Melford, Kokoro Dance, Marilyn Crispell and Zubot & Dawson. He has shared the stage with well known international artists such as Vinny Golia, William Parker, Wilbert de Joode, Gerry Hemingway, Han Bennink, Marilyn Lerner, Toby Delius, Benoit Delbecq & Eric Boeren in the US and Europe.

…utterly abandoned and impossibly tight. Wilson is an unusually direct and emotional player.
…the music, though fierce, was also suffused by feelings of joy and love; the respect that these players have for
each other is obvious. The Georgia Straight
…a talismanic West Coast figure. Downbeat Magazine

On Sunday, October 23, Standing Wave, Vancouver’s leading contemporary chamber ensemble, and Talking Pictures, Vancouver’s cutting edge improvising ensemble, join forces for an evening of extreme music creation. The program will feature Iannis Xenakis’ classic chamber works Ikhoor, Oophaa, and Plekto, bookended by improvisatory explorations as well as premieres of new works by John Korsrud and Peggy Lee for the combined Talking Pictures and Standing Wave ensemble.

Ten years have passed since the death of Iannis Xenakis, (1922-2001) the Romanian-born, Greek composer who was arguably the most influential iconoclast of 20th Century Western music. During his lifetime Xenakis was an architect, a mathematician, a scholar of philosophy, Greek Classicism, atomic physics, and computer science, and a political exile, all of which informed his work as a composer.

Xenakinesis! is Standing Wave’s tribute to this musical revolutionary. Three works of Xenakis on the program, the unremittingly intense Ikhoor (1978), the gamelan-inspired Oophaa, and Plekto (1993), with its gestures jabbing out from a dense core of sound, exemplify what the Czech writer Milan Kundera wrote about Xenakis’ music in his 1981 essay “The Prophet of Insensibility”: “…a mass of sound which does not rise from the human heart, but which approaches us from the outside, like raindrops or the voice of wind.”

Taking Xenakis’ music and ideas as a point of departure, internationally acclaimed Vancouverites John Korsrud and Peggy Lee will compose works for the combined forces of Standing Wave and Talking Pictures which we will premiere on this concert. Improvised creations of members of both ensembles will round out the concert.

“Once again, Standing Wave presented a varied and stimulating program,
played as ever, with lashings of intelligence and heart.” – The Georgia Straight

Talking Pictures presents its third Annual Invitational, featuring leading Canadian and International musical improvisers, at the intimate and atmospheric Ironworks Studios on Alexander Street on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 8 pm.Collaborating with artists from wide ranging musical and cultural backgrounds, Talking Pictures participates in an exchange of personal narratives – the lifeblood of improvised music. This year, leader and guitarist, Ron Samworth, cellist Peggy Lee and drummer Dylan van der Schyff are inviting Torsten Muller , Briggan Krauss, and JP Carter to perform together and create an evening of exceptional musical improvisation.

German born Torsten Muller is an exceptional improviser and bass player. Krauss who will be on saxophone is a founder of New Yorks’ Sex Mob and a member avant-electric group pig pen. And JP Carter who is a member of Vancouver`s stellar jazz ensembles, the Inhabitants and Fond of Tigers will be playing the trumpet for the evening. The transmission of human information inspires and transforms artists and audiences alike. It is vital to successful collaboration and strengthens the artistic community as a whole.

“… provocative, responsive quartet employing interwoven melodic ideas, funked-up freewheeling interludes sometimes resembling tunes and much guess-the-reference materials that covers New Orleans to new music.”
Goeff Chaplin, Toronto Star
